Consumer Advisory: If Your Vehicle Was Affected by Contaminated Gasoline and You Are Having Trouble with Your Insurance Carrier, Please Contact the Division of Insurance

DENVER - Between January 7 and January 8, unleaded gasoline contaminated with diesel fuel was sent to numerous gas stations in the Denver Metro Area. If your vehicle was affected by this contaminated gasoline, our partners at the Division of Oil & Public Safety encourage you to return to the gas station where the fuel was purchased to file a claim with the retailer. If you decide to file a claim with your own auto insurance carrier after contacting the retailer, and you are having trouble with a claim with your insurance company, please contact the Division of Insurance for assistance.

If you need to file a claim, keep the following information in mind:

  1. If you have comprehensive coverage, your insurer should pay for damages caused by the contaminated gasoline. You will be responsible for your comprehensive deductible.

  2. When you’re aware of damage to your engine or gas tank as a result of the contaminated gasoline, report it to your insurer as soon as possible.

  3. Do not continue to drive your vehicle if you believe it has been compromised.

  4. If you have rental car coverage, the insurer should cover the cost of a rental while your vehicle is being repaired, subject to your policy limits.

  5. If you have any questions or need to file a complaint related to your insurance coverage, contact the Division of Insurance at 303.894.7490 and choose Option 3. You can also file a complaint on our website.

You are also able to file a complaint with Colorado’s Division of Oil & Public Safety (OPS). OPS’ investigation into the contaminated fuel remains ongoing. It has consolidated the list of gas stations that were impacted.
