At the Colorado Division of Insurance (DOI), we understand that many of you, whether you live in a stand-alone house, condominium, or townhome are grappling with the burden of high homeowners insurance costs, or finding it challenging to secure suitable coverage.
In response to your concerns and in conjunction with legislation passed in 2023 - House Bill (HB) 23-1174, Homeowners Insurance and Underinsurance - the DOI is launching a study to look into the factors affecting these costs and to make potential policy recommendations.
We want to hear about the challenges that you’re facing with the affordability of homeowners insurance premiums for single and multi-family homes, and we are excited to work together to find solutions. A key component to finding those solutions will necessarily be identifying the causes of homeowners insurance affordability issues in Colorado. We’re also looking for ideas on ways to address these issues. That will be part of the work that we do through these stakeholder meetings as well.
Your experiences, insights, and suggestions are vital to this mission. They will enrich our understanding and help guide policy recommendations to better serve the diverse needs of Colorado homeowners.
Request for Comments and Information - Parametric Homeowner Stabilization Concept - Due October 2, 2023
Colorado, like most states in the western half of the country, has experienced more wildfire events in the last two decades than before the impacts of climate change began to be felt in the state. That has, in part, led to affordability concerns in Colorado’s homeowners insurance market. Because the affordability of homeowners insurance coverage is connected to the number of insurers offering coverage in the state, it is important to increase stability in our market in order to encourage more insurers to offer more policies throughout Colorado.
To that end, the Colorado DOI is seeking information on a potential concept to utilize parametric insurance to increase stability in our homeowners insurance market. Specifically, we are exploring the concept of a parametric policy with a geographically defined parameter coupled with a scalable number of total loss homes from a single wildfire event parameter. A complete description of the concept proposal is available by clicking on the box below:
